What is a Phonograph Reproducer?

A phonograph reproducer is the component of an acoustic phonograph responsible for converting the physical grooves of a record into audible sound. It serves as the link between the needle (stylus) and the listener’s ear, transforming mechanical vibrations into musical playback without the use of electricity.

How It Works

As the record spins, the stylus tracks the grooves in the record surface. These grooves contain tiny undulations that represent recorded sound waves. The stylus is attached to a small bar (stylus bar or linkage) inside the reproducer, which transmits the motion to a thin diaphragm—usually made of mica, aluminum, or another lightweight material.

When the diaphragm vibrates, it pushes air to create sound. The reproducer’s body channels these vibrations through the phonograph’s tonearm and out the horn or soundbox, amplifying the sound acoustically.
